The social media argument follows directly. Human social hardware evolved for broadband, multi-sensory physical contact — touch, smell, chemical signaling, uncompressed 3D spatial cues. Digital interfaces strip all of that away. The conscious mind logs a conversation; the deeper systems running the objective function register an absence of the signals that normally confirm tribal belonging. The result is a persistent internal model of disconnection, regardless of follower counts. The biology concludes the agent has been separated from the kin group.

From there, the paper draws its central analogy: biological apoptosis, the programmed self-destruction a cell initiates when it becomes senescent or cancerous and threatens the larger organism. The paper proposes a four-stage "social apoptosis" sequence — severed physical channels lead to pattern divergence, which the internal comparator reads as uselessness, which triggers either severe depressive withdrawal or, in extremis, self-destruction — as the agent's ancient objective function attempts to remove a perceived malfunctioning node from the network.
