This project presents an artistic-research framework for reverse archaeology, addressing the intersecting crises of digital media obsolescence, systemic cultural erasure, and the long-term fragility of human memory. While institutional initiatives such as Svalbard’s Arctic World Archive attempt to mitigate digital decay through analog migration strategies, they remain constrained by linear decoding paradigms and inherit the geopolitical and epistemic biases of their curatorial frameworks, echoing longstanding critiques of Western-centric knowledge preservation - e.g., Carl Sagan's Pioneer plaque. Voxel Matrix extends Jerry Galle’s notion of “technological fossils” and “reverse archaeology” by reframing the archive not as passive storage but as an active, adversarial site of sociopolitical inscription. Technically, the project builds on femtosecond laser inscription methods, as exemplified by Microsoft’s Project Silica, to encode data into ultra-resilient borosilicate glass substrates designed for stability on timescales exceeding 10,000 years. However, rather than preserving conventional digital formats, the system replaces transient file architectures with static neural network weight matrices. Leveraging the compression capacity of contemporary generative models, large-scale audiovisual and cultural corpora are distilled into high-dimensional mathematical embeddings, effectively transforming human cultural history into durable numerical structure. To address the fundamental problem of codec extinction and future interpretability, Voxel Matrix incorporates an analog, macro-etched “bootstrap layer”: a speculative Rosetta Stone that encodes the optical and geometric principles required to reconstruct a primitive playback apparatus. This layer functions as an instructional scaffold for re-instantiating the decoding pipeline, ensuring that the artifact is not merely archival but self-explanatory across deep time. Crucially, the project interrogates the anthropology of selection: how can a species curate its own historical representation without reproducing systemic hegemony? Rather than offering a definitive or idealized capsule of human civilization, Voxel Matrix functions as an adversarial monument - one that shifts archival practice from anthropocentric retrieval toward a speculative dialogue with unknown future intelligences. It compresses human history into a durable syntactic form of mathematics embedded in geological time, while simultaneously foregrounding the epistemic, political, and ontological stakes of deciding what is preserved, what is abstracted, and what is deliberately forgotten.
